Wood Finishing Services

Wood finishing refers to the process of protecting the surface of a wooden material. Our process starts with surface preparation, we first sand to remove scratches, scuffs, and sharp rough edges. Imperfections or nail holes on the surface will be filled using wood putty or wood filler. Some woods such as pine or cherry do not take stain evenly, resulting in "blotching". To avoid blotching, we apply a barrier coat such as shellac or "wood conditioner" before the stain. Once the wood surface is prepared and stained, we apply a number of coats of finish, often sanding between coats. Commonly used wood finishes include wax, shellac, drying oils (such as linseed oil or tung oil), lacquer, varnish, or paint. Finally the surface will be polished or buffed depending on the shine desired. A final coat of wax, if requested, can be applied over the finish to add a slight amount of protection.
